Nolan County was founded in 1881. It is named after Mr. Phillip Nolan, one of the first American traders to visit Texas many, many years ago. Nolan County is located in West Central Texas. Sweetwater is the counties seat and largest population center, which is located 42 miles west of Abilene. The county’s population is estimated at 14,544 residents, putting the county at being the 143rd largest county in the state. Nolan County’s agriculture economy revolves around predominately cattle and livestock, but a large number of the annual agricultural income stems from crops, such as cotton, wheat, sorghum, and hay. If you were to visit Nolan County, you would come to know the county relies heavily on its agricultural production, and the agriculturists who continue to support our community.
